BGCC's Brief to HUMA (November 2006)
BGCC presented a brief to the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA) in Ottawa on November 2nd, 2006. The BGCC brief and appearance was in response to the funding cuts to HRSDC programs announced by the Government of Canada on September 25, 2006. Of particular interest and concern to BGCC was the announced cuts to government funding of $55.4 million of investments to Youth Employment Initiatives and 13.8 million in spending to the Social Development Partnerships Program.

The focus of the brief was the potential cuts to the Summer Career Placement Program (SCPP) under the Government of Canada’s youth employment initiatives. The brief profiles the potential impact of such funding cuts; the value of this funding for the young people, the children, families and their communities, as well as, our sector; recommendations; and youth testimonials.

Current Status:
The following recommendation was put forward from HUMA to the House of Commons:

"That, in consideration of the funding cuts to HRSDC announced September 25, 2006, the Human Resources, Social Development, and Status of Persons with Disabilities Committee (HUMA) recommend that the government continue funding the Summer Career Placement Program at the 2005-2006 level and that the chair report the adoption of this motion to the House forthwith."
Minister Finley's response on November 3rd, 2006 is that the Government will be reviewing the recommendations made in the HUMA report.

BGCC submits Pre-Budget Brief to the Department of Finance (April 2006)
This brief focuses on three fundamental strategic areas that, if addressed with adequate funding, policy and support would dramatically improve the opportunities for children, youth and their families, and in particular those who are most at-risk. These include: Providing Opportunities for Youth and Crime Prevention; Standing up for Families and Children (with a focus on middle childhood 6 -12 years of age): and Aboriginal Children, Youth and Families. The brief also notes that to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of programs funded through government, the government needs to provide funding in a consistent and sustainable manner to voluntary sector organizations which address the needs faced by Canadians.
