CIBC’s Jim Prentice to host mentoring session with youth at Calgary’s Boys & Girls Club
To stress importance of education, dealing with peer pressure and setting goals
CALGARY, Oct. 6, 2011 - CIBC (CM: TSX) (CM: NYSE) - The Honourable Jim Prentice, CIBC Senior Executive Vice-President and Vice Chairman, will host a mentoring session with a group of seven youth, ages 11 to 15 at Calgary’s Boys and Girls Club on October 14.
“At CIBC we are committed to nurturing and educating Canada’s kids and young adults so they can build a better future,” said Mr. Prentice. “Through mentorship, we can help many kids overcome barriers, recognize their self-worth, help them set goals and build plans to achieve their dreams. We’re thrilled to partner with the Boys and Girls Club of Calgary – an organization that works tirelessly to help youth in our city.”
CIBC is a proud supporter of Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and the Torch Club program. The mission of all Clubs is to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and life-skills. The Torch Club is a leadership program that helps lay vital foundations for pre-teens to meet the demands of citizenship with inspired leadership, compassion and concern for others.
“Youth today face many challenges, from peer pressure and bullying to not having the right role models to follow," said Pam Jolliffe, President and CEO, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada. “Having someone like the Honourable Jim Prentice share his experience and guidance with our youth is an incredible gift. We're thrilled to partner with him and CIBC on this exciting opportunity.”
In June, Mr. Prentice participated in the CIBC Miracle Day Golf Tournament at the Glencoe Golf and Country Club in Calgary, which raised over $160,000 for local children’s charities. Participants at the tournament were invited to enter a draw for a chance to join Mr. Prentice on a ‘volunteer experience’ with the Boys & Girls Club of Calgary. More than 100 entries were submitted, with J.S. Rioux being selected to join Mr. Prentice for this mentoring session on Oct. 14.
