BGCC Partners with Today's Parent for Healthier Kids

Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGCC) and Today's Parent, Canada's #1 parenting magazine and authoritative voice on parenting and children's issues, are working together on the Healthy Kids 2009 campaign to help raise awareness of the need for governments and others to get involved in making Canada a safer, healthier place for children to grow up.

In terms of caring for kids, Canada lags behind many other industrialized nations in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Among 29 OECD countries, we rank 22nd in preventable childhood injuries and death, 27th in childhood obesity and 21st in overall child well-being, including mental health.

BGCC is working with Today's Parent to highlight (in April, May and June issues of Today's Parent), the poor state of Canadian children's Fitness and Healthy Eating, particularly among children living in disadvantaged communities. We are urging readers to support us in advocating for after-school opportunities for all Canadian kids that promote their physical fitness and health. Boys and Girls Clubs promote the healthy development of 200,000 children and youth annually across Canada, through a variety of programs, after-school and at other times when children are not in school. These include opportunities to be physically active and to learn about and practice good nutrition for lifelong health. BGCC offers Cool Moves, a national healthy lifestyle program supported by Kraft Canada, through its Clubs, as well as nutrition grants to enable Clubs to provide meals and nutrition education to 900,000 Canadian children and families in need.

Today's Parent is also supporting Boys and Girls Clubs in 2009 by providing:
  • delivering 5,000 complimentary copies of Today's Parent magazine monthly (courtesy of UPS) to Boys and Girls Clubs across the country in order to reach more parents with advice on how to keep their children safe from injury, and physically, mentally and environmentally healthy.
  • donating $1.00 to BGCC and three other charitable partners for every new subscription or renewal to Today's Parent
  • featuring BGCC's Public Service Announcement in its print and online publication.
