Partners - Sears Canada

Proud Sponsor of the 2010 BGCC National Conference

Sears Canada is Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada's longest standing and most significant corporate partner, helping to support the positive growth of children and youth across Canada for over 40 years, through investing in enriching Boys and Girls Club after-school programs for children and youth.

Sears After-School Enhancement Grants
Every year for the past five years, 30 Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada have each received $10,000 Sears After-School Enhancement Grants to expand services to children in local communities, reduce waiting lists and reach out to new communities in need of support. Thanks to Sears' contributions, our clubs can offer more communities nationwide the valuable service of keeping children safe and providing them with a positive, stimulating and constructive after-school experience.

Find out how you can support the work of Boys and Girls Clubs and help enrich the after-school experience for Canadian children at Boys and Girls Clubs through  Sears in-store promotions.

In 2007, Sears sponsored BGCC's three city (Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver) speaking tour on bullying. "Take a Stand against Bullying and Violence" featured internationally renowned author and child development expert, Dr. Michele Borba, who spoke to parents, educators and caregivers about how to equip children with the tools to cope safely with bullying.

"Bullying: What you should know... What you can do."
To help Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada raise awareness of the troubling issue of bullying among Canadian children and youth, Sears has provided support to BGCC for the development of an information resource on bullying that offers help to parents and kids on what they should know and what they can do about bullying.

Does this Ring a Bell? - After-School guide for parents (2001)
Sears and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada have partnered to develop the After-School resource for parents, Does This Ring a Bell? dedicated to helping parents manage the after school challenge of choosing appropriate care options for their children. The guide assists with program selection and offers practical information if children are home alone.

Youth Forums
In 2003, Sears, in partnership with BGCC, hosted four Youth Forums at Boys and Girls Clubs in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Halifax. These events brought together youth from across each city to discuss issues of concern to youth and their communities. Under the leadership of professional facilitators, the youth participants effectively identified a broad range of “key issues” and collectively recommended solutions to issues about community safety. The solutions were then presented to key politicians and community experts.

Canadian Parent Survey (2001)
In 2001, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada partnered with Sears to survey over 500 parents from across Canada, with children aged 6-14, to find out what their main concerns were regarding their children. The survey found that for 65% of parents safety was their number one concern, followed by worries about their children’s exposure to youth violence, criminal activity, and drugs and alcohol. In Families where both parents work full-time, concern for their children’s safety rose to 76%.

2005 Ipsos-Reid Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada Alumni Survey BGCC Alumni Survey

The survey found that 81% of Boys & Girls Club alumni say the Club had a very positive impact on their life and two thirds (66%) say their Boys & Girls Club experiences continue to have a lasting impact on their lives today.
