Une deuxi\u00e8me semaine d\u2019isolement et de distanciation physique tire \u00e0 sa fin, et je tenais \u00e0 vous transmettre un petit mot d\u2019encouragement.<\/p>\n

On pensait qu\u2019on s\u2019habituerait \u00e0 notre nouvelle r\u00e9alit\u00e9, mais ce n\u2019est pas encore le cas. La situation est loin de sembler r\u00e9elle, bien au contraire.<\/p>\n

On vit des moments difficiles alors que nous devons nous r\u00e9signer \u00e0 laisser partir des membres de notre deuxi\u00e8me famille \u2013 les enfants, les ados et les familles qui fr\u00e9quentent nos Repaires jeunesse, mais aussi des employ\u00e9s et des b\u00e9n\u00e9voles que nous ne pouvons pas nous permettre de garder pour le moment.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est loin d\u2019\u00eatre facile \u2013 les adieux sont difficiles, m\u00eame s\u2019ils ne sont que temporaires. On sait qu\u2019on va les revoir \u2013 on va bien finir par rouvrir nos portes \u2013 nos \u00e9quipes, nos jeunes et la vie en tant que telle vont \u00eatre de retour dans nos Repaires jeunesse un jour ou l\u2019autre.<\/p>\n

Mais ce jour nous semble encore loin. Et on aimerait tellement savoir quand ce jour viendra. L\u2019incertitude est ce qu\u2019il y a de plus difficile dans cette situation.<\/p>\n

Les r\u00e9unions en vid\u00e9oconf\u00e9rence, et tous les d\u00e9fis qui viennent avec, font maintenant partie de notre nouvelle r\u00e9alit\u00e9; rappeler aux gens que leur micro est ferm\u00e9, devoir mettre un haut convenable (parce que personne ne verra que vous portez des joggings), sortir du cadre de la cam\u00e9ra \u00e0 l\u2019occasion pour se verser un caf\u00e9, se faire un sandwich ou aller \u00e0 la salle de bain.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai d\u00e9couvert que c\u2019est pratiquement impossible d\u2019avoir quatre enfants branch\u00e9s \u00e0 internet et une conjointe en vid\u00e9oconf\u00e9rence en m\u00eame temps que j\u2019essaie de me joindre \u00e0 un appel vid\u00e9o sans que le routeur ne flanche.<\/p>\n

Et m\u00eame si on essaie de privil\u00e9gier le terme distanciation physique plut\u00f4t que distanciation sociale, l\u2019isolement social se fait sentir plus que jamais.<\/p>\n

Et on est tout sauf \u00e7a. On est une organisation qui a mis sur pied une journ\u00e9e nationale o\u00f9 on encourage les gens \u00e0 d\u00e9brancher pour favoriser les interactions face \u00e0 face. Et c\u2019est ridicule qu\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, le seul moyen qu\u2019on a d\u2019interagir avec les autres, c\u2019est en se branchant.<\/p>\n

On a, plus que jamais, besoin de connecter avec les autres et, pour l\u2019instant, notre seul moyen d\u2019y arriver est de se brancher. Mais on continue de r\u00eaver au jour o\u00f9 on pourra d\u00e9brancher \u00e0 nouveau. Au jour o\u00f9 les \u00e9crans ne seront plus la seule fa\u00e7on d\u2019interagir et o\u00f9 nous pourrons finalement accueillir \u00e0 nouveau notre \u00e9quipe en personne. Au jour o\u00f9 nous pourrons regarder nos jeunes dans le blanc des yeux et leur dire \u00e0 quel point ils comptent pour nous.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 toute la grande famille des Repaires jeunesse, je suis de tout c\u0153ur avec vous. Que vous soyez encore \u00e0 l\u2019emploi, que vous ayez \u00e9t\u00e9 mis \u00e0 pied, que vous soyez au poste pour offrir des services de garde pour les enfants des travailleurs des services essentiels, que vous redoubliez d\u2019efforts pour continuer d\u2019offrir une aide alimentaire aux familles ou des programmes via le web. Merci.<\/p>\n

Et le jour o\u00f9 nous serons tous de retour au boulot, o\u00f9 nous serons en mesure de d\u00e9brancher \u00e0 nouveau et d\u2019interagir en personne, ce jour viendra. Et nous serons l\u00e0 pour chaque enfant, chaque adolescent et chaque famille qui aura besoin de nous.<\/p>\n

A few words of encouragement and support as we end another week of self-isolation and physical distancing.

We had thought we\u2019d get used to a new normal, but that\u2019s not yet the case. This doesn\u2019t feel anything like normal.

Instead, we continue to struggle as we have to let go of family\u2014Club children, youth, and families, and Club staff and volunteers who we can\u2019t keep at this time.

It is hard. It is very hard to say good bye, and to say until we come back again. We know we will come back again\u2014our doors will open and we will have staff and kids and vitality back in our Clubs someday soon.

But it feels a terribly long way away. And we wish we knew when. The lack of certainty is what hurts the most.

Our new normal involves the weird tics of video conference calls\u2014of reminding people they are on mute, of dressing respectably from the waist up, of knowing it\u2019s ok to walk away from the camera every once in a while when you need a coffee, a sandwich, or a washroom break.

I have learned that you can\u2019t have four kids on the internet, your spouse on a video call, and then try to join your own video call without the internet router screeching to a halt.

And it is a world that despite trying to drop the term social distancing in favour of physical distancing, feels more socially isolating than ever.

This isn\u2019t what we\u2019re about. We\u2019re the organization that has an awareness day called Unplug to Connect. It\u2019s ridiculous that today, the only way to connect is to plug in. To stare at a face composed of pixels that might be someone who is just down the street from you but you can\u2019t see in person anymore.

We need to connect more than ever, and our opportunity is to plug in to do so for now. Our dream is when we can unplug again.\u00a0 When devices are not the means, the tools to connect to others, but when we can wrap our arms around our staff, welcome them back. When we can look our kids in the eye, showing them they matter and that we care.

To everyone in the Boys & Girls Clubs family: My heart goes out to you. Whether you are employed, laid off, working to provide essential day care to front line workers, getting food to families, helping other families connect to the internet, providing programs virtually.

Thank you. We will all be back. We will all be able to unplug. We will remain connected. And we will be there for every child, youth, and family that needs us.
