Derni\u00e8rement, les nouvelles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 bouleversantes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

D\u2019abord, la d\u00e9couverte des restes de 215\u00a0enfants dans une fosse commune au pensionnat de Kamloops, sur le territoire de la Premi\u00e8re Nation de Tk\u2019eml\u00faps te Secw\u00e9pemc, a \u00e9t\u00e9 un rappel dur et brutal des horreurs perp\u00e9tr\u00e9es sur les peuples autochtones partout au pays, ainsi que des traumatismes que ces horreurs ont entra\u00een\u00e9s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peu apr\u00e8s, la terrible nouvelle d\u2019un acte raciste des plus l\u00e2ches\u00a0: dimanche soir, un homme \u00e0 bord d\u2019un v\u00e9hicule a d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment fonc\u00e9 sur une famille qui faisait une promenade, une famille qu\u2019il a cibl\u00e9e et tu\u00e9e simplement parce qu\u2019elle \u00e9tait musulmane. Quatre sont morts. Et un jeune gar\u00e7on de neuf ans se retrouve bless\u00e9 et tente de donner un sens \u00e0 un monde qui lui a arrach\u00e9 toute sa famille d’un seul coup.<\/p>\n

Nous n\u2019avons pas assez de bras pour r\u00e9ellement exprimer nos condol\u00e9ances.\u00a0Pas assez de mots pour d\u00e9crire nos sentiments face \u00e0 ces actes inconcevables.\u00a0Pas assez d\u2019espace pour \u00e9vacuer toute notre col\u00e8re.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Les responsables des Clubs des communaut\u00e9s o\u00f9 ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements atroces ont eu lieu m\u2019ont fait savoir \u00e0 quel point ces trag\u00e9dies p\u00e8sent lourd sur leurs communaut\u00e9s. Et je sais que c\u2019est le cas de bien d\u2019autres aussi. Nos Clubs aux quatre coins du Canada comptent de nombreux jeunes, membres du personnel et b\u00e9n\u00e9voles autochtones qui portent le traumatisme interg\u00e9n\u00e9rationnel caus\u00e9 par les pensionnats et la discrimination perp\u00e9tuelle.\u00a0Bon nombre de jeunes, membres du personnel et b\u00e9n\u00e9voles musulmans font \u00e9galement partie de nos Clubs; chaque jour, ils font face au racisme et \u00e0 l\u2019islamophobie, et ils ne se sentent en s\u00e9curit\u00e9 nulle part, ni dans la rue ni en ligne.<\/p>\n

Et nous avons entendu bien d\u2019autres histoires horribles ces derni\u00e8res semaines, comme celle d\u2019un homme battu alors qu\u2019il quittait une plage \u00e0 Toronto simplement parce qu\u2019il \u00e9tait gai, ou celle d\u2019une femme autochtone atteinte et tu\u00e9e par une boule d\u2019attelage lanc\u00e9e depuis un v\u00e9hicule en marche, ce pour quoi son agresseur a r\u00e9cemment \u00e9t\u00e9 condamn\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Ces incidents sont survenus \u00e0 la suite d\u2019une ann\u00e9e tumultueuse marqu\u00e9e par des mouvements mondiaux de lutte contre le racisme et l\u2019oppression, qui ont vu des communaut\u00e9s du monde entier se mobiliser contre les in\u00e9galit\u00e9s syst\u00e9miques. Et ces incidents sont survenus en plein mois de la Fiert\u00e9, alors m\u00eame que nous c\u00e9l\u00e9brons l\u2019inclusion et l\u2019acceptation de la diversit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est un brusque rappel \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9.\u00a0Racisme,\u00a0x\u00e9nophobie,\u00a0discrimination, oppression\u00a0: diff\u00e9rentes formes de haine contre lesquelles nous devons continuer de lutter, en redoublant d\u2019efforts pour en \u00e9radiquer les causes profondes. Il s\u2019agit de maux syst\u00e9miques et omnipr\u00e9sents dans notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9.\u00a0Ils sont r\u00e9els, et ils sont bel et bien ici. Nous ne pouvons pas nous exclamer aveugl\u00e9ment que \u00e7a n\u2019arrive \u00ab\u00a0pas au Canada\u00a0\u00bb. Nous devons faire mieux.\u00a0<\/p>\n

La lutte contre le racisme et la x\u00e9nophobie est au c\u0153ur m\u00eame du travail des Clubs BGC. D\u2019abord, parce que nous avons le privil\u00e8ge de travailler avec des jeunes, et que nous avons donc le devoir de leur enseigner la tol\u00e9rance, l\u2019acceptation et la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration des diff\u00e9rences afin de faire changer les choses. Mais aussi parce que les jeunes qui franchissent le pas de notre porte sont souvent victimes de ces in\u00e9galit\u00e9s syst\u00e9miques, et en souffrent, car ces in\u00e9galit\u00e9s signifient que moins d\u2019occasions leur sont offertes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nous devons d\u00e9noncer la haine. Et chacun d’entre nous doit en faire plus – reconna\u00eetre les injustices historiques, \u00eatre conscient du racisme et des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s syst\u00e9miques et y travailler activement, lutter activement pour une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 juste.<\/p>\n

Nous trouvons du r\u00e9confort dans le travail que nous accomplissons, \u00e7a nous renforce et nous incite \u00e0 en faire plus. L’acceptation passe par la compr\u00e9hension. Prendre le temps de comprendre les autres, leurs origines, leur culture, leurs motivations. La \u00ab curiosit\u00e9 respectueuse \u00bb est probablement l’un des outils les plus utiles dont nous disposons en tant qu’\u00eatres humains. Nous devons susciter la curiosit\u00e9 en nous-m\u00eames et chez les autres, m\u00eame si cela nous met mal \u00e0 l’aise. C’est en apprenant \u00e0 nous conna\u00eetre les uns les autres que nous nous rapprochons, en tant que personnes, en tant que communaut\u00e9s, en tant que pays.<\/p>\n

The news has been heartbreaking.\u00a0<\/p>

First, the revelation of an unmarked gravesite at the Kamloops Residential School, situated on the Tk\u2019eml\u00faps te Secw\u00e9pemc\u00a0First Nation, containing the remains of 215 children\u2014a stark and difficult reminder of the trauma and horrors perpetuated on Indigenous people across this country.\u00a0<\/p>

Then, the terrible news of a cowardly, racist act\u2014a man intentionally driving his vehicle into a family out for a Sunday evening walk, targeting and killing them because they were Muslim.\u00a0Four died.\u00a0And a nine-year old boy is left injured and trying to make sense of a world that ripped his entire family away in one fell swoop.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

There are not enough arms to provide condolence.\u00a0Not enough words to express the incomprehensible.\u00a0Not enough air to vent the anger.\u00a0<\/p>

Speaking to the Clubs where these dreadful events happened, I heard how their communities are staggering under the weight of these tragedies. And I know they are not alone. Our Clubs across Canada are full of Indigenous youth, staff, and volunteers who bear the intergenerational trauma of residential schools and ongoing discrimination.\u00a0Our Clubs are full of Muslim youth, staff, and volunteers who face racism and Islamophobia daily, not feeling safe on the streets or online.<\/p>

And we have seen other horrifying stories over the past couple weeks\u2014a man leaving a beach in Toronto beaten because he was gay, a conviction in a Thunder Bay case of a man who threw a trailer hitch out his truck window that struck and killed an Indigenous woman.<\/p>

These incidents come on the heels of a tumultuous year that saw global movements challenge racism and oppression, that saw communities across the world rise up to confront systemic inequities. And these incidents happened during Pride Month, as we celebrate inclusion and acceptance.<\/p>

It is a sobering reality.\u00a0Racism.\u00a0Xenophobia.\u00a0Discrimination. Oppression. We have seen it over and over.\u00a0It exists in London.\u00a0It exists in Toronto, in Ottawa, in Vancouver, Halifax, and St. John\u2019s.\u00a0It exists in Williams Lake, in Battlefords, in Pembroke, in Summerside\u2014and all the places in-between.\u00a0It is hatred and we must continue to confront it, redoubling our efforts to eradicate the root causes. These are pervasive, systemic ills in our society.\u00a0We cannot blindly say \u201cnot in Canada\u201d\u2014we need to do better.\u00a0<\/p>

At BGC Clubs, the fight against racism and xenophobia is central to our work. It is central not just because we have the privilege to work with youth, and therefore have a duty to teach openness and acceptance, to celebrate difference and change the pattern, but because those who come through our doors are often the victims of systemic inequity\u2014they are hurting because of it, they are denied opportunities because of it.\u00a0<\/p>

We must call out hate. And we must each do more\u2014acknowledge historic injustices, be aware of and actively work against systemic racism and inequity, actively strive for a just society.<\/p>

We take solace in the work we are doing\u2014and it strengthens and inspires us to do more. Acceptance comes from understanding. Spending the time to understand others, their background, their culture, their motivations. \u2018Respectful curiosity\u2019 is likely one of the most useful tools we have as humans. We must instill curiosity in ourselves and others\u2014even if that makes us uncomfortable. Learning about each other is how we come together, as people, as communities, as a country.<\/p>

Together, we grieve with a family and a community in London, Ontario, where violence has shattered any illusion our society is one of peace and tolerance. And it will remain this way until we confront hate and root it out.
