En collaboration avec La F\u00e9d\u00e9ration canadienne des services de garde \u00e0 l\u2019enfance, l\u2019Association canadienne pour la sant\u00e9 mentale, et YWCA Canada, La crise de l\u2019\u00e9puisement professionnel :un appel \u00e0 l\u2019investissement dans l\u2019\u00e9ducation de la petite enfance et le travail aupr\u00e8s des jeunes <\/em>souligne en outre les domaines n\u00e9cessitant des recherches plus approfondies sur
les mani\u00e8res de mieux favoriser la sant\u00e9 mentale du personnel de premi\u00e8re ligne, particuli\u00e8rement en cas de marginalisation.<\/p>\n

Des recherches approfondies montrent clairement les r\u00e9percussions importantes de la pand\u00e9mie sur l\u2019\u00e9conomie mondiale, notre sant\u00e9 mentale, notre syst\u00e8me de soins de sant\u00e9 et bien d\u2019autres facettes de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. La COVID-19 a transform\u00e9 la structure des lieux de travail, notre mani\u00e8re de prendre soin les uns des autres, ainsi que nos perspectives d\u2019avenir.<\/p>\n

Contexte<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Au Canada, 37 % des gens signalent une d\u00e9t\u00e9rioration de leur sant\u00e9 mentale depuis le d\u00e9but de la pand\u00e9mie 1<\/sup>. Comme d\u00e9montr\u00e9 dans le pr\u00e9sent document, le personnel de premi\u00e8re ligne travaillant aupr\u00e8s des jeunes en a subi les cons\u00e9quences de mani\u00e8re disproportionn\u00e9e; pourtant, seulement un tiers des employ\u00e9s de ce secteur ont acc\u00e8s \u00e0 des programmes de pr\u00e9vention de l\u2019\u00e9puisement professionnel2<\/sup>. En outre, seulement un tiers des personnes travaillant dans ce secteur se disent \u00e0 l\u2019aise de parler de sant\u00e9 mentale avec leur gestionnaire et croient que le fait d\u2019\u00e9voquer des probl\u00e8mes de sant\u00e9 mentale ne nuirait pas \u00e0 leur carri\u00e8re3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Au Canada, une personne sur trois s\u2019inqui\u00e8te au sujet de ses finances et 16 % des gens craignent de manquer de nourriture4<\/sup>. Les d\u00e9terminants sociaux de la sant\u00e9 (soutien en mati\u00e8re d\u2019emploi, de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire, d\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 un logement ad\u00e9quat et de revenu) contribuent tous \u00e0 notre bien-\u00eatre et \u00e0 notre sant\u00e9 mentale5<\/sup>. La pand\u00e9mie a mis ces soutiens \u00e0 rude \u00e9preuve, ce qui a provoqu\u00e9 une augmentation des probl\u00e8mes de sant\u00e9 mentale. Les effets se font particuli\u00e8rement sentir chez les personnes qui travaillent avec des jeunes, leurs salaires \u00e9tant souvent bas et leurs emplois, pr\u00e9caires.<\/p>\n

Recommendations<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Un changement syst\u00e9mique s\u2019impose \u00e0 tous les paliers de gouvernement pour r\u00e9pondre aux besoins urgents qui se font ressentir dans le secteur de l\u2019\u00e9ducation de la petite enfance et du travail aupr\u00e8s des jeunes. Pour faire face \u00e0 ces enjeux de mani\u00e8re holistique, il faudra \u00e9galement investir davantage dans les services communautaires de sant\u00e9 mentale et les services de garde abordables pour tout le monde au Canada.<\/p>\n

    It goes without saying that the pandemic has left, and will continue to leave, a lasting mark on our lives.<\/strong><\/p>

    In collaboration with The Canadian Child Care Federation, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and YWCA Canada, The Burnout Crisis: A Call to Invest in ECE and Child and Youth Workers <\/em>puts forward areas requiring further research and exploration on how to better support the mental health of front line workers \u2013 particularly those experiencing marginalization.<\/p>

    Extensive research makes clear the significant impact the pandemic has had on the global economy, our mental health, our healthcare system, and countless other facets of society. COVID-19 has transformed the way workplaces are structured, how we care for one another, and our outlook for the future.<\/p>

    Background<\/strong><\/h5>

    Thirty-seven percent (37%) of Canadians report a deterioration in their mental health since the onset of the pandemic. 1<\/sup> As this brief will explore, the impact on frontline staff working with children and youth is disproportionately high and yet only one third of employees have access to programs to prevent burnout.2<\/sup> Additionally, only one third of employees say they would feel comfortable talking to their supervisor about mental health issues and believe this would not impact their career.3<\/sup><\/p>

    One in three Canadians are worried about their finances and 16% worry about having enough food 4<\/sup>. The social determinants of health like employment, food security, adequate housing, and income supports all contribute to our mental health and well-being5<\/sup>. The pandemic has put pressure on these supports, causing an increase in mental health challenges. This is particularly felt by those working with children and youth who often earn low wages and are in precarious work.<\/p>

    Recommendations<\/strong><\/h5>

    We need to see systemic-level change across all levels of government to address the immediate and pressing workforce issues that are experienced by Early Childhood Educators and Child and Youth Workers. In order to address these challenges holistically, we also need to see increased investment in community-based mental health supports and affordable child care for all people in Canada.<\/p>
