Quand une personne grandit, elle cherche \u00e0 d\u00e9finir son identit\u00e9 par les groupes auxquels elle appartient\u00a0: famille, classe, \u00e9cole, \u00e9quipe sportive, activit\u00e9s, culture, groupe religieux\u2026 Et plus elle vieillit, plus elle cherche aussi \u00e0 \u00e9tablir son unicit\u00e9, \u00e0 d\u00e9terminer qui elle est par rapport aux autres, \u00e0 mieux comprendre \u00e0 quel point elle se distingue des autres et \u00e0 quel point elle se conforme \u00e0 la soci\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 chacune de ces \u00e9tapes, l\u2019identit\u00e9 fait partie int\u00e9grante du d\u00e9veloppement.<\/p>\n

Chez BGC Canada, non seulement nous appuyons les jeunes pendant ces \u00e9tapes de leur d\u00e9veloppement identitaire, mais notre propre identit\u00e9 a aussi \u00e9volu\u00e9 au fil du temps.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 l\u2019origine, BGC Canada portait le nom anglais de \u00ab\u00a0Boys\u2019 Clubs\u00a0\u00bb (Clubs des gar\u00e7ons), puis est devenu \u00ab\u00a0Boys\u00a0&\u00a0Girls\u2019 Clubs\u00a0\u00bb (Clubs des gar\u00e7ons et des filles). D\u00e9sormais, on parle simplement des \u00ab\u00a0Clubs\u00a0BGC\u00a0\u00bb, une identit\u00e9 qui n\u2019est plus explicitement fond\u00e9e sur les notions de \u00ab\u00a0gar\u00e7ons\u00a0\u00bb et de \u00ab\u00a0filles\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Pourquoi?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pour plusieurs raisons, qui sont toutes li\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019acceptation et \u00e0 l\u2019inclusion. D\u2019abord, pendant des ann\u00e9es, les jeunes qui atteignaient l\u2019adolescence se sentaient trop matures pour fr\u00e9quenter un endroit destin\u00e9 aux \u00ab\u00a0gar\u00e7ons\u00a0\u00bb et aux \u00ab\u00a0filles\u00a0\u00bb, et les Clubs avaient donc du mal \u00e0 susciter leur participation. Comme nous savons que les services que nous offrons aux ados sont l\u2019un des aspects les plus importants de notre travail, nous devons nous assurer que ces jeunes personnes se sentent les bienvenues dans les Clubs et demeurent fi\u00e8res de les fr\u00e9quenter.<\/p>\n

Nous offrons aussi des services aux jeunes adultes qui ont besoin de soutien en mati\u00e8re d\u2019emploi et de services sociaux essentiels pour leur donner un bon d\u00e9part dans la vie. Et nous sommes \u00e9galement l\u00e0 pour les familles qui cherchent des conseils parentaux et du soutien social pour les aider \u00e0 \u00e9lever leurs enfants.<\/p>\n

Par ailleurs, nous savons aussi que ce ne sont pas tous les enfants qui s\u2019identifient comme \u00ab\u00a0gar\u00e7on\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0fille\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Et nous savons que le fait d\u2019explorer la notion de genre et d\u2019approfondir sa compr\u00e9hension en la mati\u00e8re est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment essentiel du d\u00e9veloppement identitaire.<\/p>\n

Certains gouvernements provinciaux au Canada ont propos\u00e9 ou adopt\u00e9 des politiques et des lois qui imposent des restrictions relatives \u00e0 l\u2019expression de genre et \u00e0 l\u2019identit\u00e9 de genre chez les jeunes. C\u2019est tr\u00e8s inqui\u00e9tant. Et s\u2019il ne fait aucun doute que l\u2019implication bienveillante et engag\u00e9e des parents, tuteurs et tutrices est importante pour le d\u00e9veloppement identitaire des enfants, nous savons qu\u2019il y a des situations o\u00f9 cela n\u2019est pas possible. Si l\u2019enfant ne re\u00e7oit pas de soutien \u00e0 la maison, la situation peut m\u00eame repr\u00e9senter un danger ou une menace.<\/p>\n

Les Clubs BGC ont toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 des lieux s\u00fbrs pour les enfants et les ados. Les Clubs BGC encouragent les jeunes \u00e0 explorer leur identit\u00e9, leur croissance et leur maturation de fa\u00e7on saine et s\u00e9curitaire. Notre priorit\u00e9 a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019assurer leur s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

De nos jours, \u00eatre une jeune personne n\u2019est pas de tout repos.\u00a0 Les enfants et les ados vivent une foule de difficult\u00e9s, et nous sommes l\u00e0 pour les soutenir. Chaque jeune devrait avoir un espace s\u00fbr pour d\u00e9couvrir, explorer et exprimer son identit\u00e9; les jeunes personnes trans, notamment, m\u00e9ritent un espace s\u00fbr o\u00f9 \u00eatre enti\u00e8rement elles-m\u00eames.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ultimement, les d\u00e9cisions permanentes susceptibles de changer une vie doivent \u00eatre prises apr\u00e8s des discussions m\u00e9dicales \u00e9clair\u00e9es avec des personnes professionnelles.\u00a0 Les Clubs ne sont pas outill\u00e9s pour donner de tels conseils, et ce n\u2019est pas leur r\u00f4le.\u00a0 Leur r\u00f4le est plut\u00f4t d\u2019offrir un endroit accueillant et s\u00e9curitaire o\u00f9 les jeunes peuvent r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 des d\u00e9cisions qui ont une importance capitale \u00e0 leurs yeux.\u00a0 Les Clubs ne sont pas l\u00e0 pour encourager les enfants et les ados \u00e0 prendre telle ou telle d\u00e9cision, mais plut\u00f4t pour les aider \u00e0 acc\u00e9der au soutien qu\u2019il leur faut pour prendre la d\u00e9cision qui leur convient le mieux.<\/p>\n

Lorsque les options \u00e0 cet \u00e9gard se font rares, les Clubs BGC continuent d\u2019ouvrir leurs portes aux jeunes pour leur offrir un endroit o\u00f9 se r\u00e9fugier. O\u00f9 discuter. O\u00f9 \u00e9chapper aux structures rigides qui encadrent trop souvent le monde scolaire, ainsi qu\u2019au rejet des cercles sociaux et familiaux qui ont peur d\u2019accepter ces jeunes personnes comme elles sont.\u00a0<\/p>\n

C\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 suffisamment difficile de grandir dans le monde complexe d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui.\u00a0 Cela n\u00e9cessite le soutien de personnes comp\u00e9tentes et inform\u00e9es.\u00a0 Les Clubs seront toujours un lieu s\u00fbr pour chaque enfant et chaque ado, un endroit o\u00f9 les jeunes peuvent explorer, grandir, et d\u00e9velopper leur identit\u00e9 unique et inestimable.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

As we grow, we seek identity through the groups we belong to: our family, classroom, our school, our sports teams, our activities, our culture, our faith groups. And as we get even older, we seek to establish our uniqueness, who we might be in comparison to others, to better understand how we stand out as much as we fit in.<\/p>

At each of these stages of growth, our identity is an important part of our development.<\/p>

BGC Canada not only supports children and youth through these stages of identity development, but we have gone through our own identity evolution.<\/p>

Having started out as Boys\u2019 Clubs, we evolved to become Boys & Girls\u2019 Clubs. Then we became simply BGC Clubs, an identity that dissolved the explicit nature of the original terms of boys and girls.<\/p>

Why?<\/strong><\/p>

There are a number of reasons, all that align with acceptance and inclusivity. For one, we knew that for years, Clubs have struggled to retain teenagers, who feel too mature to attend something with the moniker of \u2018boys and girls\u2019.\u00a0 Yet we also know that serving teens is one of the most crucial aspects of our work, so we need a way to ensure that teens feel welcomed in a space that they are proud to call their own.<\/p>

We also serve young adults, who seek employment supports and social services that are vital to giving them the start they need in life. And we serve families, who access parenting expertise, and social supports to help them raise their children.<\/p>

But we also know that not every child or youth identifies as a boy or a girl.<\/p>

In fact, we know that exploring and understanding gender are a key part of identity development.<\/p>

Some provincial governments in Canada have proposed or implemented policies and legislation which introduce restrictions on gender expression and identity for children and youth. This is very concerning. While there is no doubt that the involvement of caring, engaged parents and guardians in the identity development for children is important, we also know there are situations where this is not possible, or can be dangerous and threatening where support is not present at home.<\/p>

BGC Clubs have always been safe places for children and youth. BGC Clubs welcome the safe, healthy exploration of identity, growth, and maturation. Our focus has always been on keeping kids safe.<\/p>

Being a young person today is hard.\u00a0 Youth are struggling in so many ways, and we are here to support them. All young people deserve a safe space to figure out who they are, to explore and express their identity.\u00a0 This includes trans youth, who deserve a safe space to be their true authentic selves.\u00a0<\/p>

Ultimately, the guidance to make permanent, life changing decisions requires informed medical discussions with professionals.\u00a0 That is not something Clubs are equipped to do, or engage in.\u00a0 However, while youth explore the decisions that are vital to them, Clubs are places which are accepting and safe.\u00a0 Clubs do not exist to encourage children and youth in any particular decision, but to help them access the right supports they need to make healthy decisions for themselves.<\/p>

When there are few options, BGC Clubs have opened their doors as a safe haven, a place to have conversations, to escape the rigid structures that too often define the academic world, or the fear of acceptance in social and family circles.\u00a0<\/p>

It's hard enough to grow up today in a complex world.\u00a0 It requires knowledgeable, informed support.\u00a0 Clubs will always be a safe place for all children and youth, a place to explore, a place to grow, and place to develop a unique, valuable identity.<\/p>
